Benson a two-time champ at state juniors racquetball tourney

Sun Prairie's Justus Benson won a pair of titles and took home a silver medal in doubles after a grueling day of competition April 12 at the 2008 Wisconsin State Juniors Racquetball Tournament, held at the Prairie Athletic Club (PAC) and sponsored by Service Specialists of Sun Prairie.

The 10-year-old Benson won both the 10-and-under and 12-U divisions while teaming with competitor Nicholas Godwod (Green Bay) to place second in all-age doubles.

Benson beat top-seeded Nick Richardson (Green Bay) in the 12-U final in a tiebreaker after edging Godwod in a tiebreaker in the semis.

Benson and Godwod also faced off in the 10-U final with Benson again taking the tiebreaker victory.

They teamed up for a second-place finish in doubles behind Sam de Poutiloff (Janesville) and Lucas Trilling (Brookfield).

Max Dalebroux -- a 13-year-old from Green Bay -- had a fantastic tourney, edging top-seeded Connor Hueffner (Franklin) in the 14-U final and dropping a close tiebreaker to Brookfield's Dan Chmielewski in the 16-U final.

Other state champs included Carter Simon (Sun Prairie (8-U); Austin Tubbs (Sun Prairie, 12-U 2-bounce); and Max Collier (Sun Prairie, 9-U 2-bounce).

Milwaukee's Steele Beatty also placed second in the 12-U 2-bounce and 8-U divisions, while brother Mason took second in 9-U 2-bounce.

A total of 32 players from around the state played in the tournament.

12-Under - 1, Justus Benson (Sun Prairie); 2, Nick Richardson (Green Bay); Consolation, Michael Fredenberg (Sun Prairie).

10-Under - 1, Justus Benson (Sun Prairie); 2, Nicholas Godwod (Green Bay); Consolation, Cameron Knight (Green Bay).

8-Under - 1, Carter Simon (Sun Prairie); 2, Steele Beatty (Milwaukee).

12-Under 2-bounce - 1, Austin Tubbs (Sun Prairie); 2, Steele Beatty (Milwaukee); Consolation, Mason Kraemer (Milwaukee).

9-Under 2-bounce - 1, Max Collier (Sun Prairie); 2, Mason Beatty (Milwaukee); Consolation Ben Travis (Sun Prairie).
