Reading a tasty tale
July 11, 2008
Summer school students Christina Sprecher (left) and Kaprise Jones pause from reading to sample fresh figs and consult a world atlas. The classes of reading specialist Sandra Kowalczyk are reading selections from Figs and Fate by Elsa Marston, a collection of stories about Arab teenagers living in modern-day Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Iraq. In the short story "Faces," a Syrian teen tries to cheer up his mother by preparing hummus. After learning how to make the dish, students feasted on it with whole wheat pita bread, carrot and celery sticks, and olives.
