Nice bins, but maybe a little too big, readers report

More than two-thirds of our readers like the city's new recycling containers, but many would prefer a smaller size, according to the most recent Sun Prairie Today Poll of the Week.

Your additional comments supported your votes. Here are some samples.

**We've lived in other communities that had not only these recycle bins but also automated refuse AND yard waste pickup. We'd love to see Sun Prairie continue to move in that direction!

**I think I'm going to have to build an addition on my garage if I want to keep a car in there as well as this bin.

**Why hasn't trash collection been transformed? Why hasn't the city already commented on that issue? Hopefully that will be coming soon.

**Who has room for these in their garage? Need smaller bins picked up weekly.

**Will probably have to add on to the garage in order to store it!

**I love being able to combine all the recyclables in one big bin. It makes recycling easier. The fact that the bin has a cover is a big plus -- no more bottles and cans blowing around the neigborhood. It also helps contain the smell of the recyclables. I'd love for our garabage collection to use these convenient containers as well.

**It was a challenge to find spot in the garage for it but they will be great.

**I like the idea of a cart on wheels with a lid, but the size is ridiculous. This new can is either going to have to sit outside, compromising the appearance of the exterior, or a garage addition will be needed to store this monster container.

**This really cleans up the town. No more recyclables blowing around the neighborhood! Great Idea!

**Just a little too big for the one-stall garage .

**The bins are huge! It takes up way too much space in the garage!

**What a joke. I need a bigger garage just to store the thing.

**Storage of two of these monsters is the biggest downfall.

**Are they just for the residents of Sun Prairie? We live outside Sun Prairie and don't have them.

**Every two weeks? I have more recyclables than trash so it looks like the overflow will go in the trash. Negative environmental impact here we come.

**We have almost filled our entire bin up already. We are definitely recycling more because of the new bin.

**After it was emptied today the lid was left open and it had filled up with wet leaves.

**They are huge -- there is no place in my garage for them and they are so ugly I don't want it outside. Arrrggggghhhh.

**I think this is a good idea -- less stress on the men who have to pick up the bins for one thing. I would like to see the garbage pick-up go the same way as it would no doubt keep the area cleaner as wind, animals, etc. would not get into bags and scatter everything.

**They just take up too much space in the garage!!!

**I have more recyclable materials every week due to kids' milk bottles, juice bottles, cans, etc., and I just love that the new 96-gallon can accomodate them all now.

**Our family takes pride in recycling -- our bin is usually much fuller than our trashcan. However, we have a small garage with two cars -- not sure how we're going to fit the new bin inside.

**I literally do not have room in my garage. It will have to stay outside (lovely addition to the neighborhood huh?).

**The new bins look terrible on the porch of the new townhomes in Cannery Square. What a shame.

**I think a smaller bin would be suffient for the average family.

**Too big for the garage but we'll easily fill it in 2 weeks.

**Saves me hauling an overfilled bin to the curb each week. Easy to roll out to street. Saves on Gas. Love it.

**THOSE THINGS ARE WAY TOO BIG. PEOPLE W/ONE CAR GARAGES DO NOT HAVE ROOM TO STORE THEM.

**I find it interesting that the city of Madison offered more than one size ... and SP didn't. Seems like someone dropped the ball on this one.

Note: If a 96-gallon bin is too large for your needs, you can order a 65-gallon container through the city. The smaller bins will be available in January.
